      TIIVEL
      FAMILY HISTORY RESEARCH. 05.01.2002

      Aim on the research was to find descendants of Henri Tihwel's (of orthodox confession) parents and of Hans Tihwel's birth mother's (of Lutheran confession) parents.

      According to the information provided by the client Hans Tihwel lived in Viljandi, later moved to Latvia and England. We looked for Hans's birth registration in Viljandi Lutheran congregations and recordings about him from Viljandi orthodox congregation's materials, but did not find any information about him. The 1858 soul revision of Viljandi did not show any Tihwels.

      As the name Tihwel would be spelled Tiivel in present Estonian we looked for the name in the onomastical database. That showed Koorküla manorial district in Helme parish in Viljandi county as the only place where the name Tiivel (originally Tiwel) was given to a peasant family in 1820s when peasants received last names in Livonian province. Unfortunately the commune records of Koorküla have not preserved. Helme-Tõrva orthodox congregation records that are available to researchers begin from 1911. Most of the older records are not available to researchers until late 2003 or 2004.

      Although we knew from the client that Hans's father was of orthodox confession we looked for registers of parishioners of Helme Lutheran congregation and found the right family from there.

      The Tiivel family was extremely large family. Conversion to orthodox began in 1840s, so Hendrik could have been baptized already in orthodox congregation. It is possible to find more information about the descendants of Hendrik's parents after the older orthodox records begin available. It is possible to do some research already now (birth, death and marriage records from 1847, 1849-1852, 1857-1863 are available), but it takes longer time to use those without other records that show the family all together. And as we found only one sister of Hendrik, then there might not be any other descendants at all. It is possible that Hendrik had more siblings born after 1850.

      More information about the descendants of the Karu family and also Hans's sister Ella-Marie can be easily found, but the time limit did not let us do that. The 1997 database we used to find some persons is not complete and may not considered a reliable source.

      TIIVEL

      Jüri (Jürri) Tiivel.
      Children:
      1. s. Risto (Risto) (since <1827) Tiivel. *ca 1810. -1834- sr: in Alu 9 farm. [Married <1835]. -1850- sr: in Laagaste 25 farm, the farmer is not mentioned, several men (including Risto) registered in the farm could be the farmer. In 1858 sr the farmer was Moorits Volt (aka Rebane). Died 1850-1858. No male children found from Helme congregation birth records 1847-1849.
      Wife Viiu (Wio). *ca 1813. Alive 1850. [Died, moved or remarried before 1858].
      Children:
      A. d. Sohvi (Soffi) Tiivel. *ca 1838. -1850- sr: in Laagaste 25 farm.
      B. s. Hendrik (Hendrik, Henrik) Tiivel. *ca 1848. Birth not found in Helme congregation 1847-1849. Birth records of orthodox congregations of Viljandi county from 1848 are not available for researchers. -1850- sr: in Laagaste 25 farm. -1858- sr: in Anipõlde 38 farm, there were very many families registered in that farm, including some other Tiivels, but they were not closely related to Hendrik. In 1858 sr the only Hendrik Tiivel in Koorküla md was this Hendrik. It is very likely that this is the person we were looking for, although it must be confirmed with other records not available at the moment. No Hendrik Tiivel is found in Koorküla md in Helme congregation's registers of parishioners 1841-1850 (one found, but he lived only 1843-1845) and 1851-1861. [-1874-1897- of orthodox confession]. Married December 1875 [not in Helme congregation]. 1879- supervisor in Koorküla manor. As he was recorded in the Helme congregation's registers of parishioners only as a husband of a Lutheran woman, no more information about him is available in the registers. It is likely, as his daughter was born in Tõlliste that he moved there later. Tõlliste is by a railroad and next to Tartu-Valga-Riga road. We did not find any information about his other marriages, but those must have been registered in orthodox congregations and we could not use those.

      II. s. Hans (Hans) Tiivel. *27.03.1879 in Koorküla manor. (*)02.04.1879 in Helme congregation by local schoolteacher. G: single hired hand [manor servant?] Hans Ilves, single hired hand [manor servant?] Aadu Grünwaldt, maid Riin Vastison. 1889 joined Valmiera congregation. According to new calendar his birth date should be 08.04.1879.
      III. d. Ella-Marie (Ella Marie) Tiivel. *24.09.1881 in Tõlliste md. (*)02.10.1881 [in Helme congregation]. 1899 joined Valga congregation.

      There was Ann Tiivel marked under number II as Hendrik Tiivel was under number I in a register of parishioners 1874-1896. There were other Tiivels before them, but they had a separate numeration. Ann could be Hendrik's sister, but their father's names are not listed in this register. Ann was probably also baptized Lutheran, she was certainly Lutheran in 1879 when she was confirmed. Kristjan is in the register right after Ann, but without any number, because he was orthodox. There are several Tiivel families in the register of parishioners who could be families of Hendrik's siblings, but at this point it is difficult to determine that.

      Ann (An) Tiivel. *ca 1853 in Koorküla md. Births of orthodox congregations of Viljandi county from 1853 are not available for researchers. Confirmed 1879 in Helme congregation. We did not find her confirmation from 1879 Helme confirmation records, the remark could be a mistake (wrong year - she could have been confirmed 1869) or about someone else (his husband), but we did not find anyone to connect with Ann from 1879 lists of confirmed. Married 1880 [outside Helme congregation]. 1880 left Helme congregation.
      Husband Frits (Fritz) Ehrlich.

      Kristjan (Christian, Kristjan) Tiivel. -1878- Lutheran, later orthodox [until death]. [+<1896].
      Wife Ann (An, Ann) Rimmel. *18.02.1853. Baptized in orthodox congregation. -1878- Lutheran. Later until 23.04.1906 orthodox, after that again Lutheran. +01.03.1920 [in Tartu], death registered in Tartu Peetri congregation.
      1. d. Mari (Mari, Marri) Tiivel. *25.11.1878 in Kaaba farm. (*)17.12.1878 in Helme congregation by local schoolteacher. G: maid Mari Krimmel, maid Liis Sikk, farmhand Aadu Lill. Confirmed 1896 in Helme congregation. 1906 joined Tartu Peetri congregation.
