Research performed by Merike Ivask and Fred Puss, report created by Fred Puss May, 2002.
Hi Dennis,
Sorry for the long silence. There have been sone changes with the availability of records. The RUssian Orthodox records until 1891 were handed over to a public archives in Tartu, but they will not be available to researchers for some time (maybe until September). So at the moment it is not possible to get any information from those records. However, I found something interesting and I wanted to let you know about that.
From the transcription lists (lists where people who changed their place of registration - the place where they payd taxes to, where they were under court juristiction etc) of Koorküla from the year 1895 give full informatiot of Hendrik's family: Hendrik Tiivel, born 13.09.1847, wife Anna, born 25.02.1852, sons Hans (27.03.1879), Karl (08.07.1883), Jaan (1887 - no date given), Eduard (26.09.1890), Julius (04.02.1893). They were registered to Volmari (in Latvian Valmiera) commune in Volmari county on 17.02.1895. It does not mean they actually moved that year, but they were in Volmari at least since 17.02.1895. The names are in Cyrillic in the original, so this is just a normal transcription of the names. I will include Cyrillic names in the report. And it gives the birth year of Karl as 1883, not 1882! The dates are according to old style, you have to add 12 days to get a new style date.
Still his birth was not registered in Helme orthodox church or the surrounding Lutheran churches. In 1881, when Ella Marie was born, Hendrik was a post worker (in German Postkerl, it is a mail carrier with a carriage) in Tõlliste (Tolliste, with tilde over letter o, in German Teilitz) post station. You could use http://atlas.ibs.ee to locate Tõlliste, type Tõlliste (I am not sure how you can get the o with tilde, just copy-paste from some Estonian website or my email if it arrives OK) and then press "otsi" and choose "külad: Tõlliste...". Then you can see it on the map.
What about continuing the research? Although it was said in 1894 that Hendrik's wife was Lutheran I did not find his wife from any registers of parishioners of Helme or Sangaste (Tõlliste belonged to Sangaste parish). I did not look for any Annas born on 25.02.1852 yet. But it seems I cannot find much more about Hendrik's family from Estonian records until the orthodox records become available. Even then records after 1891 will be held in the registry office where research is not allowed. They sent me some information about Hendrik already, but I cannot ask them to look through records of several years. What do you suggest?
Regards
Fred
