ALEXANDER, Stafford county.
Arms: Per pale argent and sable a chevron, and in base a crescent all counterchanged.
Crest: A bear sejant erect ppr.
Motto: Per mare per terras [ means "by sea and land" ]
According to the tradition in the family, which, however, has not been proven by documentary evidence, John Alexander, the first of the name in Virginia, was the fourth son of William Alexander, the Poet, and first Earl of Stirling, born 1580, died 1640, and married Janet Erskin, daughter of Sir William Erskine. John Alexander obtained a grant of 1,500 acres in Northampton county in 1659. In 1664 as John Alexander, Sr., he patented land in Westmoreland county. He died in 1677 and had issue, John, Robert and Phillip. Robert Alexander, eldest son and heir at time of his father's decease, lived in Stafford county. He married Frances __________. He died before 1 June 1704. He had sons, Robert, born 1688, died 1735, married Ann, daughter of Col. Gerard Fowke of Maryland, and who left issue, and Charles Alexander, who d.s.p. [Decessit Sine Prole is Latin for "Died Without Issue".]
